Neighbourhoods in action
Volunteers working hard to support their community will be honoured at an event hosted by the Neighbourhood Services Division of Southampton City Council.
The first of a new annual ceremony will see thirty-five volunteers receive a commendation from the Right Worshipful Mayor, Cllr Brian Parnell.
This award recognises those individuals who work with the council and other groups in the City to make their neighbourhood a better place to live. The actions taken by these volunteers include running and improving community facilities and community clean ups.
Sylvia Baker, a volunteer from Merryoak Community Centre said: “Fifteen years ago we had nothing on the estate for kids but now we have a community centre which meets everybody’s needs. I recommend everyone to get involved with helping to run their local centre.”
“It’s wonderful to see that people from all over the City give their time to improve the place where they live,” said Cllr Phil Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing & Neighbourhoods. “The benefits are felt by their whole community and by everybody working together we can make Southampton a great city.”
The ceremony starts at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday October 7 in the Mayor’s Parlour following a buffet lunch.
