Nick will be the Turner Sims Concert Hall reading extracts from his latest novel ‘Slam
Southampton City Council has teamed up with Penguin to get everyone reading and talking about ‘Slam’: hundreds of copies are in circulation around the city at bus stops, on park benches, train stations and beyond.
The ‘Reading Slam’ event is designed to encourage people to get reading by picking up the book, talking about it with friends, family and colleagues then passing it on for someone else to read. You’ll find a reading guide and discussion questions on the City Council website (Word file) and copies of the book contain a feedback form.
Nick Hornby was born in Redhill, Surrey. After graduating from Cambridge University he worked for a time as a book reviewer and taught English to foreign students. His first book, a collection of essays on American novelists, was published in 1992 and was followed by his popular football memoir Fever Pitch. The first of his internationally bestselling novels, High Fidelity, was published three years later in 1995. Three others have followed, including About a Boy (1998), How to be Good (2001), and A Long Way Down (2005).
His latest book, Slam, is his first novel published for young adults, though virtually all of his work — including his writing about music — has had widespread appeal to teenage readers.
Nick has won the E.M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and his work has been shortlisted for both the Whitbread Novel Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
