Southampton’s future vision for its fine parks and open spaces is being unveiled at a five-day exhibition at the Hawthorns Centre on Southampton Common.

The exhibition launches the Green Spaces Strategy, a plan that develops a shared vision for the Council and Southampton residents for protecting, enhancing and creating green spaces.

The Strategy is concerned with all public open space including parks, recreation grounds, cemeteries, housing and highway green space and a network of green corridors through built up areas that provide additional natural green space.

The Council is looking at ways to increase opportunities for local people to take an active role in the management and development of their local green spaces and to promote events and activities that will encourage greater use and ownership.

"Southampton is known as a beautiful city because of its parks, common and open green spaces,” said Cllr Phil Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing and Local Services. “We want to encourage more people to enjoy this wonderful natural gift and to encourage more visitors to visit our parks. As stewards we have a responsibility to ensure that they are well managed and cared for and meet local need, as well as encourage visitors to the City. The Green Spaces Strategy provides a clear window of how we hope to achieve this. Whilst we are making a big investment in our open spaces a lot more needs to be done and we need to work with community groups to help achieve this - as was demonstrated with the lottery money for St. James Park."

The exhibition runs from November 26
