Will Young & Scott Mills at Bitterne Park School

Media students at Bitterne Park School will be getting tips from BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills when he presents his drive-time show live from Southampton on Friday (November 4).

Former Power FM presenter Scott will be in school all day, with guest Will Young, who will be performing his latest release 'Switch it on'.

The VIP visit has been arranged as part of this week's Radio 1 feature 'DJs Go Home', which has seen each daytime DJ return to their home city for a one-off show.

The specialist performing arts school in Copsewood Road has grasped onto this unique opportunity to ensure it is a valuable learning experience for students.

"The excitement and enthusiasm for having Radio 1 broadcasting their drive-time show live from your school are obvious," said assistant headteacher Liz Wylie. "Add in a live performance by Will Young and you've got an event to remember."

And a number of initiatives have been organised to make the event educational as well as entertaining:

  • BBC sound engineers will be working alongside the school's technical crew to help them learn and understand how modern sound equipment will enable the show to be broadcast live via an internet link
  • Students form the BTEC in Performing Arts course will be able to put into practice what they have been learning
  • Sound equipment that students have only been able to use in the school context will now be used to broadcast live in a national arena
  • The school's Media GCSE students are currently developing work on a radio programme and this gives them an amazing opportunity to learn from experts. They will be making their own radio programme using real interviews with Will Young and Scott Mills.

The Scott Mills Show on Radio 1 will be broadcast live between 4pm and 6pm on Friday. There will be no public access at the school to the broadcast or the performances.
