The big lunch is a new initiative taking place on Sunday July 19 all
over the UK, which aims to get local communities sharing and talking to
each other.
The idea - developed by Tim Smit and his team at the Eden project - is
to get neighbours together to eat and to get to know each other. The
ideas draws on the tradition of open-air parties but is flexible and
adaptable, so that everyone in UK in different neighbourhood can take
part or start their own big lunch. This could be a street party, a
simple picnic in the park, tea and cakes or just a BBQ in your garden.
The big lunch website is packed with
information about how to find your event to how to take the initiative
and organise your own party. There are tips on getting locals involved
as well as finding out how to get permission to close your street and
sort out insurance.
