And they're off...
The general and local elections are now
official - with Southampton City Council receiving formal notice from
the Queen announcing the Parliamentary Election.
Known as a Writ, the official document was received by the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Elizabeth Mizon and Mark Heath, Solicitor to the council and Returning Officer, on the steps of the Civic Centre on Tuesday, April 7.
This means that any residents in the city, who have not yet registered to vote or wish to apply for or amend an existing postal vote, have to do so in writing by 5pm on April 20.
Southampton received two Writs, one for the Itchen Constituency and the other for the Test Constituency.
For the Parliamentary election only, Romsey and Southampton North Constituency, which includes electors from Bassett and Swaythling, is the responsibility of Test Valley Borough Council and not Southampton City Council.
Here are the important dates:
April 20 at 5pm: Deadline for registering to vote and applying for or amending a postal vote.
April 27 and 5pm: Deadline for applying for a Proxy Vote
May 6: Election day: hours of poll will be 7am — 10pm
Counting of the Parliamentary ballot papers
May 7: City council election count
The date of the Parliamentary election coincides with the city council election and the poll cards for the Parliamentary election will be sent out this week. The postal votes will be issued separately so electors can expect two postal vote packs, one for each election.
If residents require any further information they can contact the Electoral Services Unit on 023 8083 2245 for application forms or download them from www.southampton.gov.uk or visit the government website: www.aboutmyvote.com
