Plenty to do on May Day
Here’s a round up of some of the events going on around Southampton
over the May Day weekend.
Camp out for the Dawn Chorus - May 1-2
As part of May Day and the Bank Holiday weekend celebrations staff from the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre will be hosting a ‘Dusk to Dawn’ family event at Woodmill Activity Centre.
Bring your sleeping bag and tent and spend the late evening discovering night wildlife with trained staff this Saturday, May1. Experience and meet the creatures that come out at night, grab a few hours sleep and then rise and shine good and early (4am) to enjoy the dawn chorus, followed by a bite of breakfast.
Bundle Day Carnival - May 1
The free Bundle Day Carnival is part of the ‘Solent Sunrise’ a Solent-wide celebration of May Day, co-ordinated by the Carnival Learning Centre on the Isle of Wight. Events kick off from 4:30am at Watts Park where you can join in the Dawn Chorus. See our earlier article here.
Highlights from the rest of the day include traditional Morris dancing at 5am, followed at 6am by the Carnival Costume Making Workshop. Breakfast will be on sale at the Soul Cellar from 6:30 am. Workshops including face painting and dancing taster sessions will keep the whole family entertained. At 10am everyone who attends will be offered the chance to perform in Watts Park opposite the Central Library and the Art Gallery.
King John`s Morris Men - May Day Dance
Southampton’s King John`s Morris Men will be at the Bargate from 5am 6am on Saturday May 1, to celebrate May Day and welcome the new spring season.
May Festival - May 1
University of Southampton Students Union will be holding its first ever Student Festival this Saturday. The fun-packed family day out is being held at the Highfield Campus which will be transformed into a festival for the day. Join the students (and the ducks) from 10am - 4pm as they celebrate the start of the summer.
There will be activities for all the family to enjoy, including a range of workshops, performances, tours, talks, and sporting activities to take part in. So plenty to do even if it rains. Local producers, live music, story-telling and an environmental exhibition will all be there to get you thinking while having fun. The event will also be raising money for Water Aid and the Naomi House Children’s Hospice.

And of course Enviro Rock also takes place at The Hobbit pub in Bevois Valley on bank holiday Monday (May 3) - see our previous story here.
